| Duboisia and the development of Buscopan® IBS Relief |
 |
In the search for an effective treatment for the pain of abdominal cramps, Boehringer Ingelheim learnt from the healing arts of some of the world's oldest cultures. Ancient Hindu physicians in India knew of the antispasmodic effects of a relative of the Duboisia shrub: the plant Datura.
Small amounts of Datura extract reduce abdominal spasms; however, Datura extract also has powerful and potentially dangerous side-effects. After 1945, Boehringer Ingelheim began work on developing a medication that could reduce the abdominal spasm without the unwanted side-effects of the Datura extract. By 1951, the new medication was ready for commercial production: Buscopan® was launched. Today, with more than half a century of proven expertise in antispasmodic effectiveness, Buscopan® is the world's leading selling treatment for abdominal discomfort and pain. |
