Abdominal cramps are extremely common; around 40 per cent of people suffer from them. They are very different from period pain or a tummy ache, pain from indigestion or heartburn and are a direct result of muscle spasm in your gut.

The entire digestive tract is very sensitive and a variety of diet and lifestyle factors, including eating a food that doesn’t agree with you, or a stressful event, can aggravate the movement of the smooth muscle action of the digestive tract. A spasm can be triggered by diet or lifestyle changes, food allergies or intolerances, food poisoning, hormonal factors, gastric infections and stress.
